Hello all, I am curently in the I.B. (International Baccalaureate) program in school and am planning my EE (Extended Essay) which I have to write over the summer. This essay, for those of you that do not know about it is an essay of any topic that you chose and ranges in between 3,000 and 4,000 words.
I have picked my topic and it is the title: a character comparison between Dumbledore and Gandalf.
A little background: I have religiously read the Harry Potter series and have viewed all the movies numerous times. I have passages memorized. I am an avid fan. Now for The Lord of the Rings side, I have seen all the movies 2-3 times and really enjoyed them and I have much respect for Tolkien. I bought 7 Tolkien books off of eBay for including shipping!
I am currently reading them now. I blasted through the Hobbit in about 3 days and am 75, or so, pages into The Felowship.
I am going to list what I have found similar between the two characters and I am asking for peer review from YAHOO! Answers. I request that you argue points that are weak, what could be included to make them stronger, and what is not the truth. (Guided, I have not picked what is actually going into the paper, these are just ideas that I could expand on):
1). The respected animals of the two wizards and their symbolism. I could list Fawkes’ role in HP:2 and how after Dumbledore dies in HP:6, he is shown flying away to be reborn, blah blah blah. I could tell how Gandalf’s horse is the best in the land and how he acquired it.
2). The two wizard’s role of importance. This involves their leadership positions (Leader of the Order of the Phoenix and Leader of the Fellowship of the Ring, respectfully). I could tie in how Dumbledore orchestrated the mission to acquire horcruxes ("The Cave," in HP:6 specifically) and how Gandalf brings the dwarf clan to Bilbo’s house and tells him he is going to be their burglar. Gandalf orchestrates "The Burglary."
3). The nature, age and appearance of the wizards. I want to argue that their natures are that… relaxed-winky-comical (I need a more specific word). First things I think of are Dumbledore stopping the processions in HP:1 to speak four words: "Nitwit! Blubber! Oddment! Tweak!" I think Gandalf shows this in The Hobbit when after the group spends their first night on Beorn’s property, Gandalf comes back and rather than immediately telling the group why he hasn’t been there all day, he finds it necessary to blow smoke rings every where. *I think age and appearance are rather obvious. The appearance take the idea of the classic Merlin dress (which I’m assuming I can trace back to more Norse). I know Dumbledore, according to an interview with Rowling was 115-116 when he dies. I have read that Gandalf was in his thousands when The Lord of the Rings takes place. Drastically different in age, but the idea of ‘old’ is carried over.
-I want to find an example of Gandalf being nimble (to compare to Dumbledore’s perfect breast stroke in "The Cave" – HP:6).
4). I may attempt to argue the resurrections. Gandalf the Grey – Gandalf the White, easy enough. The Dumbledore side is more tricky. I think Dumbledore is resurrected in all of his pictures which are all over the magical world, Hogwarts namely. Now, after Harry’s horcrux is destroyed by Voldemort himself, "Platform 9 3/4" is the dream-like…thing involving Harry, Dumbledore and *Voldemort’s spirit?* I want to argue that this is real, while being fake, but all the while being magical and it is Dumbledore being resurrected.

Comic relief?
Resourcefullness – Dumbledore can conjure up a mean transformation! (a comfy, or not, couch). Also, he can make an invisibilty charm that is as strong as Harry’s cloak. I, sadly, do not know Gandalf as well as Dumbledore…
This is not a research paper, this is an investigation, FYI.
